Tacloban is very happy with them, and it is our hope that they will soon expand operations to cover the entire campus. Perhaps they will be the phoenix arising from the ashes of DWU. | Comments: | Dear DWU People, I was one of the group that founded the DWU Jubilee Foundation, with the expressed purose of helping reopen DWU. We did our best, but it seems there were some parties who did not want it to reopen, or wanted it reopened but on their own terms.... The good news is that the Benedictine Sisters, who operate St. Paul's Hospital, are slowly taking over the DWU campus by opening up their own Catholic school, which is a branch of St. Scholatisca's College of Manila. Sr. Eloisa David, OSB, MD, is the person behind this, and the one running the new school. It is as Catholic as DWU, and perhaps will be operated with more wisdom and foresight. Is this legal, one may ask. When the school opened a few years back - it is offering health service courses - the Union said it would picket the opening. Who could imagine that this prestigious university would close? Not in anyones dream!I felt for all the students who now have to seek their knowledge somewhere else. It must have affected many families economically since some probably have to send their children to Cebu or Manila for that matter? This rumor that it will open again ......though still a rumor really makes me glad and for the sake of everyone who cares so much about this institution,I hope that this rumor will come true. | Comments: | id like to find out if and when will be the reopening of the university...and how will it be settled after for so many years of controversial isuues engulfed in it...where will be the source of its funding then? if ever it reopens...does it mean...new policy systems to be adopted and further to be implemented as well as having the new set of administrative officers??? i hope this new system and concerned personnel one way or the other make a new, better and bold difference in running the university and producing global competitive quality education...after all...im just concerned in the crediblity of my first alma mater wherein i have grown up with... i hope...d mistakes and failures in the past...will never happen anymore because its the future and educational training of its students will be place at a greater risk!!! n besides...im proud where i came from--DWU!!! there's no any other institution as better as this university!!! I only want to share my regrets on the closure of DWUT, it was the only high standard school and was to have the only acclaimed medical school in region 8 at that time. But that's history! I am actually proud of that University since it was known not only to the entire visayas region but in the whole country and maybe the world. Nicolasora, and everyone in the secretarial dept. who were quite helpful to me. i graduated w/ a degree in B.S. I am a supporter of this faction to bring back the old spirit of the university and am very optimistic about it. My father, the late Wenceslao Esperas Ripalda, was a native of Tacloban, Leyte. He was the 1974 Hermano Mayor for the City. Most of us, his children, had one way or another gained valuable education with this institution. I have fond memories of DWU, most of all, it gave me the knowledge, skill and education which made the transition from being a Social Worker in The Philippines to a Social Worker in Australia. This was Because DWU had the educational curriculum and background in par with the Australian Social Work studies. Info: National Office of Overseas skills recognition (NOOSR) in Canberra went to DWU (and other universities in the Philippines to accredit their standards and DWU was the only university in the visayas region (and 5 UP branches all over the Philippines) accreditted that compared with/came up to Australian standard. Isn't this a good reason for all DWU graduates to join hands with those working to get DWU back on its feet? Every little thing/dollar counts. Imagine all past graduate contributing, say $100 each (minimum)...what would it do to start the ball rolling? |

I was a BSME batch '87 graduate and I am proud we were 100% passing in the Mechanical Engineering Licensure Board Examination, with one of our classmate Engr. Jorge Labaclado placed 19th. I am proud to be part of DWU. I was admitted at the UP Diliman MS Environmental Engineering without being required to take a load in the undergraduate Engineering Mathematics as a prerequisite in the Advanced Engineering Mathematics, simply because my Engineering Mathematics courses at DWU Engineering were at par at UP Diliman. I am proud of my Alma Mater and this was part of my campaign motto during the Annual Election of the Philippine Society of Mechanical Engineers Quezon City Chapter held last August 2001. It had given a lot of opportunities for the men and women whose lives would have been meaningless had they not gone to a university. The presence of DWU in Region VIII was very convenient for the parents whose priority to educate their children was second only to none! Easy to reach, thus easier on the budget. Yet, even if it was just the only university in the area, it had its standards of education that many universities envied upon, noticeable in the results of national examinations, for one. The closure of DWU was a shame and a dismay! It is about time to bring back the pride of the region. |
